Fearless, Fierce and Fake: Gabrielle Union Breaks It Down

When all your desires are distilled
You will cast just two votes
To love more
And be happy. ~HAFIZ

geleIf you sit down and take the time to listen,  you will hear the compassion that your fellow colleagues and sisters in leadership are crying out for. Compassion is love. Compassion allows you to do your best work without diminishing someone else’s light.  Compassion allows you to dig deep without feelings of envy or jealously. Compassion allows you to look at a situation from a position of power. Compassion allows you to remove the ego from having an emotional overdose.

Today I celebrate my sisters because I celebrate myself. Today I love my sisters, because I love myself. Today I embrace my sisters because I embrace myself.  You don’t get in life what you want, you get what you are and who you are.  I choose to celebrate her instead of compete with her. I choose to love myself and my sister-friends and associates. I choose to pray for them instead of preying on them. What do you choose?

Let us work on uplifting, encouraging and empowering one another. We need to embrace Lean In: Women, Work & the Will to Lead by Sheryl Sandberg.  I want you to take two simple steps towards activating your compassion.  The first step is deciding what compassion means for you.  The second step is believing you deserve compassion and so does your associates and sister-friends.
Check out this video loaded with truth, love and compassion.  Activate compassion!

Keep The Fire Burning

Often times I would attend a conference and after the conference the momentum is lost. After all that hard work that the host goes through in order to put on a stellar event it is lost in time and people are now looking for the next big thing. In my experience in planning the Activate Conference, I felt like I was planning a wedding. Post conference is when the executing the vision started. Just like a marriage, after the big day when you declare your “I Do’s”, the real work begins when you come back from your honeymoon. It is my responsibility to keep the momentum going and the fire burning.  I consider the Activate Conference an experience that will continue to offer great information and ongoing edu-tainment until we meet again.

With that being said I just want to thank everyone who participated in the Post Conference Marathon last week and now I am excited to announce the launch of the Keep The Fire Burning: Activate Post Conference Marathon Part 2 featuring our break out session speakers.

Everyday for 15min starting at 1pm EST on October 8th to October 17th.

Your Message Has Purpose

Reason #8 to attend the Activate Conference:

images (14)You know your message has purpose and now others need to know it.

When you speak, you want others to listen. When you write, you want others to read it. Why? Because you’ve realized your words move mountains. For you, talking and writing is more than a method of communication, it’s a tool to inspire, educate, uplift and rebuild. Your message doesn’t just show that you’re intelligent. Your message has a purpose and now others need to know it.

The Activate Conference with Lucinda Cross is going to ignite the flame of your words and kindle that fire until your words are explosive! You have a message that has been building from experiences, journeys, the sweet smell of victory and the burning sting of defeat. All of that has marinated into a message and once you learn how to craft it, you’ll be a force to be reckoned with. The Activate Conference will be led by people who have built messages and platforms that reach beneath the surface. It will be attended, by people like you, who know their message has a purpose and they are ready to share it with others.

You’ve probably asked yourself “do my words have weight because they don’t captivate my audience?” or “how can I show people that the story I have is worth listening to and learning from?” The answer is by surrounding yourself with professionals with proven results. You must be in the company of people who know how important it is to build a message, share it with others and watch the sparks fly. The Activate Conference’s speakers and panelists will show you how to enhance your message and brand.  When you attend the conference, you won’t have to worry if your message is strong enough or if people will listen to it. After you leave the conference, all you’ll be thinking about is how you’ll manage the abundance of new speaking requests.

Is Your Writing Boring?

People like to know what to buy, why to buy, when to buy, and how.

In terms of writing and content there are 3 styles of writing.

Aristotle talks about persuasive writing: ethos, logos, and pathos.

  • Ethos is the style of persuasive writing that appeals to credibility
  • Logos is the style of persuasive writing that appeals to logic
  • Pathos is the style of persuasive writing that appeals to emotions.

5 Things To Consider Before You Hit The Stage

Keynote: Passion Into Profits Conference in NY

Presentations require energy and effort.  This will give you the edge you need in order to rock your audience and give them more than what they expect.

Here are 5 ways to set your next presentation on FIRE that I personally use:

  1. Try your best to find out about your audience and the state of mind they are in. This will help you to craft the right message and have the right amount of energy. Think of what your audience is expecting and then surprise them by doing more.
  2. Guy Kawasaki 10-20-30 Rule states that a powerpoint slide should have no more than 10 slides, last no longer than 20 minutes and have no text less than 30 point font. It doesn’t matter whether your idea will revolutionize the world, you need to spell out the important nuggets in a few minutes minutes, a couple slides and a several words a slide.
  3. Give your audience more than two reasons to invite you back for a repeat performance.  Show them that you are an expert in your field. Show your personality; be open and down to earth. Use humor gracefully and graciously.
  4. Take it easy. When it is time for questions and answers consider statements like, “that’s a really good question,” or “I’m glad you asked that.” This will help you to gather your thoughts. These are called “filler responses.”  Filler responses are smooth transitions and are much better than your common um’s and ah’s.
  5. Connect with your audience. Get them involved- intellectually, emotionally and maybe physically without over doing it. This allows them to become a part of the performance. (This is what most concert performers do, they get people to sing along, rock and sway, jump and shout. The people feel like they attended one of the best concerts ever because they were a part of the performance.)

* Have a signature opening and closing. You can play music or a movie clip before you start or you can close with an exercise. Be creative.

After you set your presentation on FIRE and the audience is well fed.  Think about what you want to happen next.  What action steps do you want your audience to take away after your presentation?  Stephen Covey, author of The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People stated” begins with the end in mind.” You should know what you want your audience to come away with and this will help you with delivering a power house, on FIRE presentation.

Part 2: The ABC’s of Being an Irreplaceable Presenter

Speaking at The Girl Exhale Conference in FL 2012

Today we are going to take a look at letters D, E and F when it comes to presenting with power. By learning and applying the alphabet speaker tips, you will become more valuable in every phase of your presentation. And as your value increases, you will become more confident in your presentations, more productive, more vital to event planners, coordinators and those who seek to hire you. This is the alphabet soup for presenters, speakers, or anyone who has something meaningful to say.

Let’s begin…

D-Double dip.  Prepare yourself for the opportunity within the opportunity. This means that you set yourself up for the next ____________(fill in the blank). As a presenter or a speaker you must learn how to be an opportunist. How can you leverage this opportunity to build your list, join a future webinar, tele-seminar or smaller event based on your topic? Find out how you can partner or further support the organization that hired you to speak. This way you can engage the audience and the organization to hear more than your 15min-45min spiel. Presenting is one opportunity but look for an additional opportunity within the opportunity to build your platform and establish a stronger relationship.

E-Energy. Come prepared to fill the room with vim and vigor. Consider some techniques that will help shift the energy. Keep in mind your audience is just as nervous as you are. Ice breakers, music, affirmations or prayer are great ways to initiate the energy in the room. I found props and exercises to be a huge hit for my presentations. It calms my nerves and allows me to find out where the energy in the room is. Once you find out where the energy in the room is, then you can pull from that side in order to engage the other side of the room. If you feel the presentation is running dry or the energy is too low, consider giving them an exercise to do, give away some prizes, call up a few volunteers. Keep the ENERGY flowing. (Know your audience as well, based on the age range and the seating in the room, don’t ask everyone to stand up when the seating is awkward. Avoid the “butts in the face” and “boobs on the back” exercises because of limited space.  Avoid breathing exercises especially after lunch; the worst thing is to have someone breathing on your neck after an onion salad or fish sandwich ~ewwww).

F-Face locution. Remember that your face is talking just as you are presenting. What do I mean by “face locution”? You must be aware of your facial expressions and keep in mind that people are watching your facial reactions. If you look in the mirror and start to do a mock presentation, watch how your eyebrows move, your lips, your eyes, your forehead, etc. Your facial expressions in addition to your tone of voice give your words more definition and power. Your audience is going to respond based on your facial talk. So take a look at a past video you have done, or record yourself and see if your face is in conflict or agreement with your message. We all know the faces our mother used to give us and we know what those facial expressions meant without her opening her mouth. The same goes for us presenters. Watch what your face says…lol It may be cursing your audience out…

More speaker tips tomorrow…. (G, H, & I)

Do you remember your childhood dreams?

Do you remember your childhood dreams?  I was inspired after reviewing this video by Randy Pausch on his lecture called “The Last Lecture.”

What are some of your childhood dreams?

How many of those dreams have you achieved?

Make this year the year that you begin to pursue some of those childhood dreams.

Here is a list of some of my childhood dreams:

  • write a book
  • meet the President
  • be a late night talk radio show jockey
  • be on the Huckstables show
  • travel to Africa
  • fly a plane
  • be an Actoress
  • be in the Guinness Book of World Records
  • be on the cover of a magazine
  • walk a modeling runway

Comment and share a few of your childhood dreams?

Get out of the “Waiting Room” in your life

Most people are uncomfortable speaking their truth.

Most people are afraid to step into their power.

Most people get frightened at the thought of  embracing a new mindset. I know I was when it was time for me to come out of my shell and share my most intimate and valuable life lessons.  The moment I embraced my expertise and life experiences my world changed. That is the moment I realized that my story is not about me. My story is about the hundreds of women I am exposed to every month.

Your story needs a stage.  I am not necessary talking about public speaking but your public message to the world that radiates all that you stand for as a women, as a spiritual being.

Let 2013 work hard for you rather than you work hard for it.

Is there is a talent you want to share?

Is there an event you want you have?

Is there a book you would finally like to write?

Your story (your truth), needs a stage, a presence and position in the world.

2013 is the time for being plush, radical and off the radar.  The time to celebrate your story & your voice. Many of my clients tell me they are seeking their purpose in life; they’re waiting for that magical epiphany where their mission becomes clear in terms of speaking/writing.  2013 is the year for main stage, time to get out of the “waiting room” of life & celebrate your voice & your story in a plush, radical & off the radar manner. Here is a picture of my ideal stage for my 2013 celebration?

The Power Dress: Is it time for a wardrobe makeover?

Lately I have been considering a new style of dress when it comes to branding my public appearance.  I went through a phase of wearing plain corporate suits, then fancy suit jackets, then vintage dresses and now I just love to find my dresses in little boutiques in the village of New York.

But I am considering a new style that can really brand my personality and my presentation. A POWER DRESS is what I am in the search of.

Do you have a certain brand style in the way you dress?
Or a hat style or scarf signature?Do you have a certain accessory style or color?

What about that Power dress?  Men have a power suit and a power tie.  I am on the search for that Power Dress since I love wearing dresses so much.

I started to check out some of this elegant lady and I see that the dress adds to her look and speaks volumes in my eyes. Sexy but classy. Daring but Crisp.  I would love to hear what you think and if you have a certain signature piece or style, feel free to post a picture and share.

I would love your feedback.

Here are some pieces I like that Gina Torres, a television and movie actress is wearing.
