How I Stepped Into My Purpose After Prison

Life after prison can be uneasy.

Where was I going to live? How was I going to support myself? What was I going to do with my life?

This new found freedom was overwhelming, especially when trying to decide what to do with the rest of my life.

Let’s face it: few people know what they want to do with their lives. The pressure of finding my passion and stepping into my purpose was enhanced after prison. It wasn’t a want. It was a genuine need.

I had to dig deep into the essence of my being to see who I was. I used this introspection to put the pieces of my life’s puzzle together. Doing this helped me discover my passion and step into my purpose.

Here are three introspective things I did that allowed me to step into my purpose after prison.

I let go of my dissatisfaction.

Misery will help you find your purpose.

Many people believe dissatisfaction is a bad thing. We’re taught to do everything possible to avoid it. So we develop habits to mask it. We take pills. We plaster on a fake smile. We buy something new. But what many don’t consider is that our dissatisfaction is actually a good thing. It’s our subconscious calling out to us for help. It’s a sign that we’re meant to be doing something. It’s the path that will lead us to our purpose.

The problem with these negative thoughts is not so much the thoughts themselves. It’s actually the repetitious cycle of thinking this way. The reason we think this way is because we don’t see a viable strategy for happiness. In order to create a viable strategy for happiness we have to turn our negative thoughts into positive actions.

After prison, I did everything I could to conceal my dissatisfaction with myself. I soon realized masking my misery wouldn’t help me heal or find my way in life. So I embraced it. I prayed, I sought counsel from others, and I looked for guidance everywhere. Eventually, my misery pointed me in the right direction.

Acknowledging my dissatisfaction allowed me to step into my purpose of uplifting others.

I left my comfort zone, again.

Being uncomfortable will help you find your purpose.

I was abruptly forced outside of my comfort zone at a critical point in my life when I went to prison. I was scared, withdrawn, and so very uncomfortable. But being there opened my eyes up to my unwavering spirit and intense power. As a person, I had changed.

After prison, I went back to partial normalcy and routine. This did me a huge disservice. I became comfortable, again.

When we become comfortable it means we’ve let our mistakes and setbacks define us. We become afraid of being vulnerable and potentially looking foolish. So we accept mediocrity. We proactively avoid challenges that increase our ability to be successful.

Deep down I knew if I ever wanted to be successful, I’d have to leave my comfort zone. In order to find my purpose, make it my passion, and walk in my destiny, I’d have to try new things. Even if that meant struggling to pay the rent.

Because the path to your purpose is going to be filled with potholes. But you must be strong enough to know that finding your purpose will bring you success.

I embraced my gifts.

Understanding your natural abilities will help you find your purpose.

Your natural abilities will guide you towards your purpose.

Do you like math? Are you a great listener? Do you have a knack for building things?

These things are your natural abilities. They’re your God-given gifts. They’re great clues for discovering your purpose.

Your natural abilities walk a fine line between what you’re good at and what interests you. Unfortunately, this line doesn’t always lead directly to your passion. It often zigs and zags. So figuring out what your gifts are can be difficult.

After prison, I asked myself what I was good at doing. I decided to make a list of activities that interested me and that I excelled at. What did this list reveal to me? That I had a gift for motivating others into action using my words.

The gift was like a little seed planted inside of me. I didn’t realize it was there until after I asked myself. But for it to grow I knew had to use it. Finding this little seed inside of myself shortened my path to finding my purpose, and it bloomed into my passion.

If You Don’t Do It, It Will Never Be Done

“Every man and woman is born into the world to do something unique and something distinctive and if he or she does not do it, it will never be done.” Benjamin E. Mays
As we get closer to the end of 2016 I believe it is extremely important for you to embrace your wins and your learning lessons.
Activator, you have a gift for the world that no one else has. You are the secret sauce that makes life so flavorful delicious. Yes, you might have made some mistakes. Yes, you might have said yes when you should have said no. But I want you to stop thinking that there is nothing special about you and your story.

You’ve been waking up and changing lives without you even knowing it. You have been depositing little drops of hope and faith thinking that what you said and what you did, didn’t really matter.

But it does.

And it did.

That little vision, that small desire, that little nudge that keeps pulling at you is the real reason why you’re here.

What is the gift you have for us?

What is the gift that you are carrying for someone else?
You are the gift my lovely Activator. Large or small, you are holding on to something that only you can give.

3 Sure-fire Ways to Make Really Bad Life Decisions

MVI_8880.MOV.00_03_54_17.Still002When we set out to achieve our goals and reach our milestones in life we can be sure on at least one thing – there will be difficult decisions that need to be addressed.

In fact, my #Activate rule of thumb states that if there are no difficult decisions on the table, then the milestone is minor and the goal is too small!

When it is time to make a decision in life we are placed in a position called POWER. We get a chance to choose what to do next and what happens next. Often our first reaction to the most difficult decisions is to “push it under the rug” but we all know that’s not productive.

The next response is often times to bully ourselves into stressful energy, but that never seems to work either. We’re much better off with the solution I call “Let It Flow.”

F- Free your mind and go into silence. Quiet the inner chatter so that the truth can speak.

L- Let go of the need to be right. Let go of the fear of being wrong, and the pride to have control. (more…)

On The Agenda But Not Part Of The Program!

“When you’re accustomed to privilege, equality feels like oppression.”

It appears to me that the issues in the community are on the agenda for discussion but they are not on the program and tables of priority when it is time to make changes within our broken system.

My mother used to say “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it”. The system is broke. It has been broken for years. How about over 500 years of brokenness covered in a word called privilege.

Is it possible to clean up and restore over 500 years of blood, sweat and tears?

The invisible barrier that once was, is now painted with human blood. Anything that is divided can be attacked and threatened.

Wars are won with strategy.
Wars are won with unity.
Wars are won with courage.
Wars are won when the ones being attacked realize they have the power.
Wars are actually won, when the love for what you believe in is stronger than the fear you are facing.

The enemy of fear, doubt, racism, scepticism, illusion, delusion, confusion, premature death, segregation, ignorance, etc., will not win.~ Lucinda Cross

How can we place these issues that are on the “agenda to be addressed” in the “program to be solved” to truly make some changes in the communities in which we work, live and serve?

I want you to click here and read this article that was so well written and on point.

P.S. Thinking I may need to make some changes with #Activate2K16 because there is something bigger that needs to be addressed.

TRANSFORMING STEREOTYPES OF SISTERHOOD

Sisterhood is a reward.

The sister relationship, above all other relationships, is the greatest of all.
I believe sisterhood requires more energy than parenting and more work than a marriage.

Sisterhood is a bond often threatened and is threatening all in the same breath.

When women get married, a union is formed.
When women have a family, a nation is built.
When women step into their purpose and empire is created.
But, when women get together the world changes.

Sisterhood, in my opinion, is not something that can be defined. It is an experience that must be had.

There was a time when I might have attempted to understand the term “sister” or “sisterhood” by looking outside myself for a definition. Today, however, as I am perhaps wiser and certainly more confident, I choose to rely on my own personal experience and observation. Although I don’t have a sister by blood, I am well aware of the uniqueness of this relationship and the value it holds for me.

I had the pleasure of interviewing four ladies that I have been watching on Instagram for quite some time, and their movements are astounding. I call these four ladies “The Elements.” They each bring something valuable to the society that they live, work and serve.

Their bond doesn’t come from superficial commonalities, but a shared understanding of each other’s experience and contribution to the world. Within this understanding, any differences can be embraced.

Monday Motivation: How Are You Going to Change the Game?

In order to be a successful chess player, you have to first understand how to play the game. You are probably thinking, Lucinda that is obvious. However, you will be surprised how many people try to jump into a new arena without actually educated themselves on the specific subject.

If you want to be an extraordinary chess player, then I would say observe other successful players or find a mentor to teach you the tricks of the trade. In other words for every new venture you decide to embark on, such as being an entrepreneur or a public speaker, do your homework and study that particular expertise. Also, you should find someone who has traveled the road for advice.

The game of chess requires a player to hone in on their strategic skills and thinking. Therefore, the game seems to be the universal symbol of strategy. Although skills needed in the game of chess can be highly effective in other arenas, if you continuously study the game of chest you can memorize all of the possible moves one can make and all of the possible advancements their opponents can make. Of course, this takes a lot of practice and dedication. However, some fields there is no blueprint and you can’t predict someone’s move thus preparing to make your next. For example, the game of business is unpredictable. Unlike chess, you can’t think of all the possibilities of what may happen and try to find solutions.
