Going from “Suck to Non-Suck” as a Public Speaker

How many times do you talk yourself out of a great presentation? Meaning that you are so focused on the presentation that you lose sight of the hearts and minds in the room. I call this the Poorly Perfect Presenter.  The Poorly Perfect Presenter wants to make sure everything is perfect and works so hard at being perfect that they become more automated and robotic in their presentation and less heartfelt. These kinds of presenters miss out on really connecting with the audience.

The Power Dress: Is it time for a wardrobe makeover?

Lately I have been considering a new style of dress when it comes to branding my public appearance.  I went through a phase of wearing plain corporate suits, then fancy suit jackets, then vintage dresses and now I just love to find my dresses in little boutiques in the village of New York.

But I am considering a new style that can really brand my personality and my presentation. A POWER DRESS is what I am in the search of.

Do you have a certain brand style in the way you dress?
Or a hat style or scarf signature?Do you have a certain accessory style or color?

What about that Power dress?  Men have a power suit and a power tie.  I am on the search for that Power Dress since I love wearing dresses so much.

I started to check out some of this elegant lady and I see that the dress adds to her look and speaks volumes in my eyes. Sexy but classy. Daring but Crisp.  I would love to hear what you think and if you have a certain signature piece or style, feel free to post a picture and share.

3 Ways to Tackle Abusive Business Relationships

 

What is an abusive business relationship and how to get out of one?

An abusive business relationship is one that just stresses you out plain and simple.  It can be and will be a huge disadvantage to the growth of your business the longer you allow the abusive relationship to linger on.

 

Most abusive business relationships include:

  • being inconsiderate towards your needs
  • lack of trust
  • often attacking your value and worth
  • feeling as if you are walking on egg shells
  • lack of communication
  • controlling and a “know it all” attitude
  • being taken advantage of
  • domination and subjugation

To name a few…

If you feel or know that you are in an abusive business relationship, please don’t ignore the signs of abuse. Ignoring the abuse allows the issues to grow bigger. Start to curtail the interaction with the abusive person so that the abuse can stop or you can walk away a freely.

Here are three ways to tackle an abusive business relationship.

1. Understand that you cannot change the other person. In order for things to change you have to either call in reinforcement such as a coach, mediator, or mutual party to hear both sides of the story.

2. Set boundaries. Decide whether you are going to stick it out, or move on. Your abuser maybe dealing with some sort of trust issues that could have started in childhood, and may have very little to do with you personally.  In most cases both parties are suppressing some heavy emotions that are hindering the business from growing productively.

Think about your working agreement…Was it clear? Was it focused? Was it a win-win? Were you clear on results and expectations?

3. Make better choices. Most of the time, alarms and sirens go off before we begin to engage in an unproductive or toxic business relationship. We see the signs, we hear the messages, but we disregard them in the hopes that our intuition and gut feelings are wrong.

Learn to pay attention to your instincts from now on. Make choices that are life affirming versus those decisions that will drain you physically, mentally and emotionally.  Stay clear from chaos and drama.

Keep these three supportive principles in mind the next time you embark on a new business relationship.  Just like any relationship it takes time to get to know one another.  That is why dating is so important.  It helps you to see the sirens, smoke signals and warning signs before you say YES.

Show and Tell: 3 Elements to a Great Presentation

Remember in grade school you had “Show and Tell” day.  Well as an adult “Show and Tell” day is every day. Your performance and your presentation is more than what you know, and what you’ve done in the past; it’s about what you do with what you know. Your reputation is a combination of how you show up and what you do when you show up in life.  How are you showing and telling in your day to day interactions? For example when you are interacting online as motivational speaker and your post are complaints and mishaps. There are no time-outs, or do-over’s when it comes to our performance in life. All it takes is an instant to touch someone-or to undermine a lifetime of good “Show and Tell” performances.

Every moment is an opportunity to shine. Regardless of your position or profession, you are on stage at all times.  Your local postman has a reputation to live up to, your bus driver has a reputation to live up to, your local mom and pop shop has a reputation to live up to, etc.  Your performance is ultimately not about thinking or knowing but doing. What are you going to do when it is your time to present or perform?

Here are three elements to consider:

Be innovative: Go above and beyond to establish a positive reputation and go beyond the rudimentary to hone your skills to a higher level so when you enter the room, when you show up at work, when you present your biz, etc. it supersedes your expectations.

Be committed: Discipline yourself to become better and do better than the last performance/presentation. Demonstrate that you know how to do what you do, practice and perfect what you do, and have the passion to become better.

Be consistent: Make sure your values reflect in your actions.  Be known for something.  Your performance tells a great deal about your commitment level, consistency, mastery of skills and professionalism. Consistency builds trust.

Remember this side note: performance and presentation matters. It is the “Telling” part of the “Show and Tell”. I was inspired to write this post thanks to my Twitter friend @elaynefluker who posted: “Your reputation determines what they think of U before U enter the room. Your presentation = what they think of U when you’re IN the room…”

March Manifesto: The Power of Belief is in the Placebo

This month’s Manifesto is to help the overwhelmed and support the unfocused.

Have you heard of the placebo effect?

Well it’s when one group of people receive a dose or doses of the drug being tested and the other group receives the placebo, the non drug. Both groups are given the medicine believing that the medicine will cure them. Studies show 70 percent of patients in most cases healed themselves of the illness just through the power of belief. Isn’t this interesting. Let me ask you:

What do you believe about yourself, your goals and your vision?
If I told you right now that by taking the Activate pill it will cure your procrastination and stagnation, only if you took a dose a day, would you believe me?

If so get a glass of water and get ready for your first dose.

This is what March Manifesto is all about. Helping you to get rid of your procrastination or stagnation by forcing you to take inspired action every day. Many people I consult and coach do a lot of “doing”, and some do a lot of “do-nothing”. The question I ask them is what should you be focusing on this month? Who do you need to meet with this week? Who do you need to follow up with tomorrow? Who in your social media circle should you be talking to and connecting with? Who?

I spend two days a week connecting with high end individuals. This week I plan on meeting with a Congressmen and a TV Producer. I look to connect with individuals who I can support to do more of what I love. We have to be conscious with our March Manifesto and how we are leveraging our time, our space and our network.

Here are some tips I posted on Facebook and to my Activate 24/7 members to make this week more effective:
• Make 1 challenging phone call every day this week
• Speak or volunteer for an influential group or organization
• Have lunch with someone of influence and power
• Make 1 contact about article writing or a media interview to boost your credibility
• Follow up with 3 potential referral partners that WILL hire you
• Post up a new testimonial this week to leverage “word of mouth” marketing

4 Rules of Imperfection: Imperfection Looks Good On Me

Imperfection rule #1: So what! In order to be imperfect you have to have an outcome.  What is the outcome you desire to see? Once you have clearly defined the outcome you are expecting, detach from it.  Hope for the best, wish for the better.  Either way you win.

 

Imperfection rule #2: Is it working? Are you aware enough to see whether what you’re doing is working or not working? Many people continue to do what’s not working trying to be perfect.  Perfection can keep you stuck.  Doing your best and doing what works will get you to where you need to be.

 

Imperfection rule #3: Have a smorgasbord. A great way to move forward with your plans is to have a variety of ways that you can prosper and succeed.  Have more than one income stream, have more than just a book, have a workshop to go with it, have more than one way to get things done, make more money, have more time.  The more you are flexible the more harvest you will reap.  Harvest comes from planting more than one seed.

 

Imperfection rule #4: Do something. Nike told you to “just do it”, Rocky told you “you are the champion”, President Obama told you “Yes we can”, God told you “you are more than a conquer” so TAKE ACTION and put what you know into PRACTICE.

 

Being imperfect is fun there is no failure, no pressure, no stress or anxiety.  Imperfection is results driven and productive. Try it on, one size fits all.

This is not the time to second guess your self or let people talk yourself out of what you need to do or decide to do. This is the time to trust, pay attention, and operate out of “READINESS”. Talking about ready is not going to do it, thinking about ready is not enough, writing about ready is not going to work. It’s Provocative!

What’s Provocative?

According to the Merriam-Webster’s dictionary.  Provocative adj. adj \pr?-?vä-k?-tiv\ : serving or tending to provoke, excite, or stimulate.

 

 

What do you have to offer that provokes change?

What do you do that excites yourself and others?

How do you stimulate your mind and the mindsets of others to act and think differently?

 

Are you Provocative?

The new question is, “Is it provocative? If it’s not provocative then what is it about? Why should I buy? Why should I attend?, Why should I invest?, Why should I call you? Why should I speak up? Why? Why? Why?

The opposite of provocative is repressive.  Repressive means that there is some sort of bondage, restraining and inhibiting of your mental freedom.

Have you ever thought about how the people you come in contact with feel when they speak to you, visit your blog or website, read your messages, consult with you, etc.  Let’s look at some power players:

Iyanla Vanzant – provocative or repressive? Provocative.  She stimulates those she comes in contact with; she excites women and men to stand up for themselves.

Donald Trump- provocative or repressive? Hmmm this is a good one.  I would say Repressive. He is all about himself, yes he build some provocative properties, but in my opinion he surrounds himself with provocative individuals especially women. Ahem, excuse me for that low blow.

The Kardashians- provocative or repressive? Hmmm this is a tough one.  If we go according to Kim alone we could say image provocative for men maybe, for women, not quite excited about her.  Not quite clear about her positive message to the world.  The other two…hmmm, I will let you decide. My vote would be repressive.

Floyd Mayweather– provocative or repressive? easy one…Provocative. He challenges those around him, he constantly challenges himself.  He stimulates those on the outside of the ring to come with your best shot or don’t come at all.  That is provocative.

 

Okay I know you can think of a few others, but here is just some off the top of my head…here is the trick question.

What about you are you provocative or repressive? Do you stimulate those you come in contact with or do you hold back so therefore those around you are holding back? What about your business message, your mission, your 10sec pitch, your brand, your website, your title, your book, your products.

Let’s get it right this time around.  Next time you have an intelligent conversation, make a business or life decision, buy that next power suit or dress (I’m not talking about that black dress on sale that shows everything but the veins in your body) make sure it’s provocative. If not, just keep your ears open and your mouth shut until you start exciting yourself enough to excite and uplift, empower, and inspire others.
