The Gift Of Adversity

The gift of adversity.

Sometimes adversity ends in sweet success, and sometimes it’s in the funk of failure.

One thing that we can all agree on is that adversity forces us to get comfortable with being uncomfortable.

The english college that we have to deal with in life challenges us to find our inner strength, and to find strengths we didn’t even know we had, to tackle
problems we had no idea how to solve, and most importantly how to go against the odds.

We come out the other side a different person, with a new perspective and appreciation for life.

Keep The Fire Burning

Often times I would attend a conference and after the conference the momentum is lost. After all that hard work that the host goes through in order to put on a stellar event it is lost in time and people are now looking for the next big thing. In my experience in planning the Activate Conference, I felt like I was planning a wedding. Post conference is when the executing the vision started. Just like a marriage, after the big day when you declare your “I Do’s”, the real work begins when you come back from your honeymoon. It is my responsibility to keep the momentum going and the fire burning.  I consider the Activate Conference an experience that will continue to offer great information and ongoing edu-tainment until we meet again.

With that being said I just want to thank everyone who participated in the Post Conference Marathon last week and now I am excited to announce the launch of the Keep The Fire Burning: Activate Post Conference Marathon Part 2 featuring our break out session speakers.

Everyday for 15min starting at 1pm EST on October 8th to October 17th.

44yrs Ago A Great Man Died So The 44th President Could Be Elected

44years ago a great man died so that the 44th President could be elected.

Looking at what Martin Luther King talked about, marched about and believed, manifested years and decades later. I want you to look at what you stand for today?

How are you impacting others?

What speech have you been saying these past few years?

Have you been depositing words of healing or words of hurt into your household or even to those you come in contact with?

Is your message consistent?

Is your message authentic?

As you review the speech below, I want you to think about what have you been preaching about and speaking on lately.  This pertains to everyday general conversations on the phone, at work, with your family or your friends. Do they know what you stand for? Are you walking your talk?

Make sure your conversation is full of substance and change.  Just like our forefather Dr. King Jr. who walked his talk and it continues to manifest as we look at the manifestation with our 44th President Obama.

Your words can heal, hurt or change a generation/nation. Yes, it is that serious so watch what you preach, teach and present this year.

Networking events: Are you feeling like Agent Smith from the Matrix?

How often do you see the same people at different networking events?
How often do you see the same folks at different conferences and seminars?

I do believe it is important to make friends and connections outside of the current circle you are in. I remember when i used to attend every networking event that came up and what started to happen is that I was not seen as someone who is indispensable but someone who had a great pitch and great ideas.

No real money was made, no real collaborations happened and I found myself wasting time and money because I did not have clear networking goals and I kept circulating within my same group. I did not add a little diversity into the mix.

I challenge you to go outside of your zone this month and search for an event that is not in your zone. If you can’t find one, then create one.

Activate: Become Indispensable…you do this by changing the faces that are in your face. If you keep seeing the same folks at networking events, conferences and seminars that means you are in the “mix” and not a “special sauce”. I challenge you to network out of your “mix” once a month. Go the extra mile to make new connections. You don’t want to blend in, you want to be that “special sauce” that stands out. I remember I went to speak at an Arabian networking event, I walked away with 4 high end clients because I positioned myself as the “special sauce”. If you are in the “mix” and nothing changing then its time to pack up and change your zone. #crossthebridge

Digital Underground: Is it taking over human interaction?

No one is talking face to face anymore; we have slowly become cyber robots.  Church is online, school is online, you can go food shopping online, work fulltime online, virtual dates and even bullies are online.  Where is the human interaction? We are doing more emailing, more tweeting, more status updates, more blog reading (including this one), and less interaction. Guess what? This is making us less human and more technical in my opinion.  People are online all the time, mobile devices, mobile home offices, instant access to anyone at any time.  Don’t get me wrong I enjoy my virtual world, but it is essential to be fully engaged in REAL life experiences.

I see people texting while waiting in line for their coffee, while exercising in the gym, while going up or down in an elevator, on their way to the train, during dinner and even during family emergencies you get notified on Face Book. Yes, we are able to maximize the tiny windows of time, but we are slowly losing the very thing that keeps us alive. Scientists are discovering an unexpected side effect: The higher digital input we receive, the less time our brains get to process information, learn and become creative. In other words: We need downtime away from the gadgets to get new insights and new creative ideas.

I myself have created a digital diet.  I am on the computer for a certain amount of time, and then I am on the phone certain amount of time and then no texting when family is home or around.  I have to give myself time to think without being on warp speed all day.   I don’t run to my phone first thing in the morning and I don’t rush to Face book or Twitter, I give myself thinking time especially when my mind is still fresh in the morning.  I love the internet but I use it to keep me above ground and ready to activate.

If you’re wondering what is happening to your brain and why it’s difficult to retain information or stay focused, it’s probably due to being on digital overload, in what I call a digital underground, never surfacing for air. If you are looking to renew your creative fire you have to be less online. “Almost certainly, downtime lets the brain go over experiences it’s had, solidify them and turn them into permanent long-term memories,” said Loren Frank, assistant professor in the department of physiology at the University of California, San Francisco recently in The New York Times.

Be moderate and responsible with your time online.  If you feel you are a tad bit addicted, start to wean yourself off slowly.  Cherish your offline moments while you can.

Two Thumbs Up: Crave Chat in NYC”Flip It Before You Ditch It”

I had the pleasure of going to a Crave chat in NYC.  As one of the invited guest panelist our discussion was based on the following topic:

“Flip It Before You Ditch It! Have you ever considered doing the exact opposite of what you’re doing right now? Maybe with your whole business, maybe with a small part… brainstorm what it would look like if you completely flipped it! This is a valuable exercise that, at the very least, will inspire a myriad of new ideas for your business.

Not only have these panel speakers flipped aspects of their own lives to make them happy, but they have built careers around helping others do the same. This month is more than a CRAVE chat of sharing great tips and resources. We invite you to a workshop where you can share your current business concept and receive. We will collectively brainstorm possible ways for you to flip it into something new that makes you happy.”

As one of the guest panelist in the room, I was able to sit back and observe the energy and the passion that these womenpreneurs had.  I have attended many workshops and networking events and this by far is one of the best.

Here are some important qualities I love:

The intimacy- NYC is overcrowded with events and networking gatherings.  Entrepreneurs are not lacking direction in this city, but what we are lacking is quality groups, small but powerful and that is what Crave brought to the table.  Something intimate that allowed each attendee the opportunity to get as much support as they wanted, some even raved about their business concerns and refused to walk away without them answered.

The location- the location was in a central area and outside was quite busy and was surrounded by lots of places to eat afterwards if you wanted to connect further and most of all it was a small business work space called:  Entering the location on one side is the mini conference room where we all gathered and on the opposite side was booth space for people who needed a virtual space to work and I seen one mom there with her son just plugging away at her business. (Awesome)

The team- The people who were hosting and representating for Crave were inviting and made you feel like family.  Instantly as I sat down I was greeted with a smile and shoves of agreement throughout the conversations, we laughed and joked as if we were girlfriends already. Anytime you have someone representing your company make sure they represent the brand image and these ladies were awesome.

The panel- This was a perfect set up.  We each complimented each other; we each had a huge sense of humor that lightened up the conversation of business and most of all we are already thinking of collaborating and taking the show on the road. I have been to some panels that were more of an EGO challenge, where one panelist wanted to appear savvier than the others, but this was quite different we all had an expertise and we all finished each other’s sentences.  It was weird how it happened but we had fun.

Crave was a great place to be on a hump day (Wednesday).  To top the night off we had one of the sponsors Love Potion 214 give us a delicious taste test of their Love Potion 214.

Special thanks to my agent Desiree Frieson who stayed calm during my rant in traffic, since Obama was in town and Bieber fever was at the tree lightning.  Talk about a gridlock alert. I could have got out of the car and walked and would have been there faster than the traffic that night, but it was worth every minute of it. #getadrivernexttime

You are the Celebrity in the room.

You are the star.

You matter.

You count.

You need to show up.

I hear it all the time people looking for celebrities before they invest in an event online or live.  Are celebrities preventing you from getting what you need because if they don’t show up you don’t show up? Well here is a tip from someone who worked with celebrities before.  Before they became who they are, they showed up when no one else did and they made sacrifices.

I am in the process of putting together a series of events and I don’t want you to contemplate whether you should attend or not based on celebrities who are living the life they want, making the money they want and doing what they want, while you sit back and watch and wait for them to show up.  At my event the only celebrities in the room are YOU.  You are the only celebrity that needs to be in the room.

I have been to some events where there were celebrities who came by for a brief moment without speaking to the people or even depositing any valuable information.  They were paid to make an “appearance” and that is all they did.  They walked in and people watched and took out their cameras and that was it.

I have been to some events that were not packed because there was no celebrity invited to attend and the information that was provided was life changing, and the people in attendance walked away with more than they bargained for.

My point in this post is that YOU are the celebrity, you should not miss out on another opportunity to get what you need or meet someone fabulous because the event is not star studded.

Celebrities are living their life, its time for you to live yours.

I hope to see you at my upcoming events because the only celebrities I am inviting are you.  Can you make an appearance at my next event?

Monday Prescription: Time for Heart to Heart Communication

During my presentation, I often stop the host from reading my bio, because what I am about to present has nothing to do with the media outlets I was featured on, the magazines I was in or the books I wrote or co-authored.

I don’t want people to see an “expert who appeared on…” I want people to experience a breakthrough of someone who can relate and provide a solution. That is where the breakthrough is, that is when the transition happens, when you are giving a heart to heart.

Television appearances are edited and scripted, magazines are edited, radio interviews are also scripted at times and edited, the networking elevator pitch is scripted, and even some of the presentations people give are scripted and rehearsed.

So tell me, at what point do you get to cultivate an authentic relationship?

At what point do you get the raw material?

This week I want you to pick 3 people you would like to cultivate a raw and authentic relationship with. They can be anywhere online, offline, U.S or UK.  Figure out what it is about that person that resonates within you.  What do you admire about them? Which of their values, behaviors, or accomplishments have impressed you?  Then I would like for you to state a specific way in which you can help or would like to be useful to that person.  Spend time coming up with creative ways to do this. Make sure you understand who they are and what challenges they face and follow through on the help you offered.

As I mentioned above, your communication has to come from the heart. Your offer of help has to be sincere, I repeat, your offer has to be sincere and you should absolutely be committed to following through on it.  Here are some heart to heart questions:

What keeps you up at night?

What accomplishments are you most proud of, in life or business?

What does a typical day look like for you?

What’s your unique story? What makes you different from everyone else?

What do you desire most at this point in your life?

How do you get your information (books, TV, radio, magazines, email, etc?)

What was the most expensive product or service you ever bought?

If money weren’t an issue, how could I best support you?

What is your most pressing issue right now?

What kind of things are on your calendar for this week?

What’s not working? What are you doing over and over again without the desired results?

What are you tolerating in your life or business right now?

The answers to these questions will support you in cultivating proactive relationships.  Enough of the Friend Feed let’s get to know each other better and have a Heart to Heart.
